My Juicy Book Review on “Super Rich” by
It was a game-changing event and Marie had a stellar line-up of speakers throughout the course of the weekend.
One of the speakers was Russell Simmons and man, was it a treat to see him speak live!
For those of you who don’t know, Russell Simmons is the Founder of Def Jam Records and played a huge roll in introducing Hip Hop to our Nation. He is also the founder of Def Jam Poetry, has produced television shows and is the creator of the Phat Farm Fashion line.
Aside from being a successful Entrepreneur, Russell is a true-blue yogi and his book Super Rich talks about his outlook on business and life. To Russell, being Super Rich means that you’re in the state of needing nothing at all.
Now this might sound counter intuitive, but once I read his book I totally fell in love with and agreed with his concept.
Specifically, there were a few key concepts that really spoke to me and I would like to share them with all of you
Concept #1: Do What You Love and Have Fun
The first concept I want to share from Super Rich is to always focus on doing what you love and make sure you have loads of fun along the way!
This concept is very inline with our Juicy Geniuses Philosophy. Alex and I believe that life is meant to be lived and experienced and one way of doing this is to try new things and find out what you absolutely love spending time on.
When you do what you love and have fun along the way, you’ll be amazed at how your world unfolds. Amazing opportunities that you never even dreamed of will suddenly appear in front of you and before you know it, you’ll realize that you’re accomplishing your dreams, loving life and having a helluva’ good time along the way!
Concept #2: Act In Service of Others
Another concept that Russell speaks about in his book is that it’s extremely important to act in service of others.
Now this doesn’t mean that you have to put your own well-bing aside, but it does bring attention to a very valid lesson. The reason why we do anything makes a world of difference in how people receive our message and services and it directly impacts how we effect (or don’t effect) peoples’ lives.
If you’re getting into business with the sole purpose being to make a lot of money, chances are good that you might make some (hell, you might even make millions!) but that at the end of the day you’ll have an empty feeling of unmet desire and longing deep within your soul.
At the end of the day, you’ll find yourself unfulfilled and a large part of why this happens is because you’re not following your purpose and passion and/or you’re not focused on providing deep, life-changing value to your audience or customers.
Always ask yourself how you can provide value to other people and make this a top, daily priority.
When you focus on doing what you love, having fun and helping other people, you’ll be truly fulfilled and the money will naturally come your way
Concept #3: The Past Doesn’t Matter
Russell says that “No matter what you’ve done in the past or not done in the past, that you have the choice to do what you wish and choose your future.”
To me, this is one of the MOST important concepts that Russell speaks on.
It’s far too easy to get caught up in the “comparison game” or the “but I’ve never done this before game”.
I know I’ve found myself shying away from something new or challenging because I compare what I accomplished in the past to what I have to accomplish now.
Not a good practice to get into because at the end of the day, we’re ultimately responsible for what we do or don’t do at any given time.
When you realize that the past is the past and that you DO have the power to create your future, great things start to happen and what used to seem impossible or unrealistic now seems like a walk in the park or at the very most, a healthy challenge!
Concept #4: Treat All People Equally and Let Go of Judgement
The fourth and final key concept that Russell speaks about in Super Rich is the importance of treating all people and opportunities equally.
It’s easy to get caught up in our ego and think we’re above a certain project or job, but Russell reminds us that no matter what the task is at hand, it’s important to put 110% effort into all that we do.
When you work hard and are committed to excellence and serving others, the right opportunities will appear over time. And while it’s important (and crucial!) to have big goals and visions, it’s equally important to work hard in the present moment on the task at hand (even if it’s not exactly what you want to be doing) and know that your dedication and persistence will pay off in the long run.
Russell speaks more about his philosophies on life and business throughout this book and I definitely recommend Super Rich as a nice, easy read for those of you who enjoy learning from someone who has a lot of life experience and success.
